This eel-like fish is native to the Pacific Ocean coastal waters of North America. It is not a commercially caught game fish, so if you want to try it you’ll have to catch one yourself. Traditionally, a poke pole made of bamboo is used to catch a prickleback. The poke pole has a small lead wire and a hook usually baited with squid.
While ugly, this game fish has a mild, sweet flavour and is supposedly delicious. Not something I’m going to try anytime soon. I can’t imagine pulling this out of the water and thinking it might be tasty.
Before today’s word prompt I had never heard of a monkey faced prickleback fish. Here’s to learning something new every day!
If you’ve eaten this fish let me know how it tasted and if you caught it yourself.
Monkey faced prickleback, monkey faced prickleback, monkey faced prickleback, monkey faced prickleback, monkey faced prickleback. What a mouthful!
